So... you've decided to bring a parrot into your family....
The birds we place that have been rescued have often been in many different homes and sometimes in terrible situations. We bring these birds into our home and first assess their general health, providing any necessary medical care. Over the course of the next several weeks to several months we work with the bird to rehab and retrain it to make it ready to become part of a permanent and loving family.
We never guarantee the health of the birds and we NEVER, EVER guarantee that parrots won’t bite. ALL parrots bite in the right circumstance. We do our absolute best to determine and meet the needs of each bird in order to determine the best home situation for him or her. Our adoption process and application make it possible to match birds with owners in the most compatible way. While we feel that families with children should definitely be able to experience the joy of owning a bird, we do not place birds in homes where a child will be the primary caregiver. We also do not place birds with anyone under 21 years old. This is simply a personal preference. We feel that the commitment involved in owning a bird that may outlive you is extremely significant and young people often do not have a frame of reference to understand the gravity of that type of commitment. Any applicant will be subject to completing an application, multiple interviews, a home visit and/or photographs of the home the bird will live in, and references. It sounds a lot more invasive than it really is, but our first priority is ALWAYS the welfare of the bird. We don’t put you through these steps to intrude on your life, but to make sure we are pairing the right owners with the right birds. Once you adopt a bird from us, it is YOUR bird, but we are committed to providing advice, assistance, and support for the rest of the bird's life. We require two monthly updates after the adoption and appreciate future updates and photos, if you are willing. We have been fortunate and our bird families have been wonderful about letting us know how their birds are doing! As is typical with most animal rescues, if at any time you are unable to keep your parrot, we require you to surrender the bird back to us. In some situations, we may agree to placement that you recommend (such as a family member or good friend). We require this because we are ultimately responsible for the placement of these animals and we have committed to ensuring their security for the rest of their lives. We ask you to never be afraid to ask a question or share a concern, either before or after you adopt. Our “door” is always open!! Our fees are payable in CASH ONLY unless otherwise noted or agreed upon. We do not hold birds as a general rule. We hope to help you find a lovely feathered soul to join and complete your family!! |
