CBH Adoption Process
1. Review our entire website thoroughly.
We provide a lot of information about who we are and what we do as well as information about birds that are or will be available for adoption. We include bio’s for each available bird which includes a photo and information about their adoption fee. Our "FAQs" page answers the most common questions and concerns that we receive. Our "About Us" page gives information about our background, our philosophies, and other pertinent information.
In particular, we ask that you review our "Adoption Requirements" before submitting an application for adoption.
If you can’t find an answer to your question on any page, please don’t hesitate to ask!
2. Submit an Adoption Application.
Complete and Submit the Adoption Application, available on the "Adoption Application" page.
3. Be patient. We will review your application and contact you.
Once we have received your completed application, we will review it. If we feel that you are a good potential candidate for adoption, we will continue to the next step in the process. If, based on your application, you do not meet our adoption criteria, we will email you immediately with that decision. If you would like to know why we came to that decision, please ask. If we have declined your application for a particular bird or species but feel that you may be a match for another type of bird, we will include that information in our response.
4. Telephone interview.
The next step in the process is a phone call. We will discuss any questions or concerns we might have as well as discuss birds you are interested in. This initial call is designed to share more information, address questions, and get to know each other a little bit. It is not formal, nor is it an interrogation. We believe in establishing a relationship with our adoptive families because we feel strongly that this is the best way to ensure that we are placing our birds with the right people. Anyone can answer application questions "correctly" on paper, but we believe that in connecting with applicants on a personal level we are better able to decide where to place our birds. Subsequent calls will help us to build on that relationship and help us feel comfortable with our decision. The number of conversations will vary.
5. Home visits/photos of home.
Whenever possible we will schedule a home visit. This visit is not designed to intrude and we are not looking for signs of wealth or big, beautiful homes. Home visits are done to ensure that your home is safe and that the parrot you're interested in will be placed in an area that is best for their well-being. Visits are also important in giving us a sense of the dynamics and level of activity in your home. We do not expect a sterile, spotless environment. We are not there to judge the quality or organization of your home.
Because we allow families that live outside of our immediate area to adopt, we cannot always make a home visit. In those cases, we ask for photos of the area in which the bird will be kept. In addition to a photo of where the cage will be placed, we will ask for corresponding photos of the entire room. It is not a photo shoot for Homes & Gardens, so please do not feel we are looking to be impressed by your interior design skills!
6. Final interview.
Once we have collected all pertinent information, we will call to let you know that you have been approved to adopt. This discussion will include information about adoption fees, any additional stipulations that we may place on the adoption, and we will schedule an appointment for you to meet the bird in person. We do require that adoptive families come to our home to visit and to pick up the bird. We do not ship.
7. Adoption day!!!
When you come to pick up your new family member, you will sign our contract and pay the adoption fee (payable in cash only). We will go over the contract with you and address any questions or concerns. We will provide an information sheet specific to your bird and discuss any special needs. We will take a photo or two of you and your bird for our records and website (we will be happy to email you copies). You will be required to bring a travel cage and we will help you secure your parrot for the ride home. Once you've signed the contract, the parrot will be an official member of your family!! Please don't be surprised to see a couple of tears as you leave...we love these birds and will miss them!!
8. Follow up.
Our Adoption Contract stipulates a phone call within 48 hours to let us know how your bird is doing as well as a minimum of one update in each of the next two months. Those updates can be made by phone or email...and we LOVE to see photos!! Those three updates are required, but additional updates are very much appreciated!
In addition, CBH offers continued support and education at no charge. If you need help or advice at any time, please do not hesitate to contact us. We can help with behavioral or training issues that arise and even offer grooming (nail, beak, & wing trimming). We are committed to supporting our birds for their entire lives!!
